"Fancy a weekend in Snowdonia, riding and running up mountains with a dip in the lakes?" Tim Lloyd, The boss of Always Aim High events asked me several months ago.
So that is why, at 8am on Saturday 31st April, I was stood in my wetsuit, with 3 swim caps, wetsuit gloves and boots, stood in the car park at Plas Y Brenin Outdoor centre looking up at the snow covered mountains, and thinking "Are we seriously going to swim in the lake?"
Yes we did, it was f**king freezing.
And that was the start of a fantastic 2 days on the Raceforce/ Always Aim High Snowdonia Training weekend. My role was as guide/ enthusiast/top tip giver/ bike wind breaker/ puncture repair girl/ all round helper.
Day 1: Saturday 31st May, Snowdonia Triathlon day (formerly Snowman Triathlon)
8am- Dan Bullock, swim coach at Swim for Tri, took us through a chilly lake swim.
Warm up/ refuel
10am- Cycle on the Snowdonia Triathlon course- 60km
Led by Ken Buckley of Buckley performance coaching, I led the middle group around the 60km route and joined in with the Strava segment smashing fun.
2pm-Afternoon of workshops on transition skills/ swim analysis/ watt bike technique/power
5pm- Run on probably the most scenic run route there is, the new Snowdonia triathlon course
7pm- Dinner in Plas Y Brenin
Snowdonia Bike route can be found on my Strava here. Spot the segment that was the Strava challenge! QOM one minute, two days later I receive the 'Owww noo xxx has stolen your QOM' message. The ups and downs of Strava life!
Day 2:Sunday 1st May, Slateman Triathlon Day- Based at Surflines in Llanberis
8am- Lake swim over in Llyn Padarn, home of the Slateman swim
8.30am-Get warm, spend a good 10minutes in hot showers at Surflines in Llanberis
10am- Cycle the Slateman bike route. Again I led the middle group, some challenging weather on todays ride.
1pm-lunch, dry out
4pm- Run on the Slateman route
That's a brief over view of the weekend.
And in pictures....
Plas Y Brenin, was the base for the weekend. Raceforce/Always Aim High had hired one of the bunk houses which was an ideal base.
No shortage of food for the weekend
Day 1 Riding. Sun is out, snow on the mountains makes for some awesome views while we cycle the Snowdonia triathlon route.
Sorry guys, not creating much draft as I lead the middle group on my TT bike! Fantastic group of super keen, triathletes.
Is there a better run location? Setting out for the final session of the day, to run along the old Roman road that forms the Snowdonia Run route
Day 2 began with a swim in Llyn Padarn. I had woken up that morning to strong winds and heavy rain. "Awww day 1 was nice, I guess we won't be doing much today" I thought. How wrong was I. These guys are not fair weather triathletes.
Swimming in Llyn Padarn, home of the Slateman Triathlon. Braved it in just wetsuit today and no gloves or boots. Acclimatising to the Arctic conditions
Surflines, Llanberis, our base for day 2 and the start of cycling the Slateman Bike route. Weather conditions were a good challenge. I felt my leadership of group 2 was successful as no one got hypothermia or blown off the mountain, everyone made it round in one piece.
A fantastic weekend playing out on the Slateman and Snowdonia Triathlon Course. If you are racing Slateman this weekend, good luck, have fun and enjoy the stunning surroundings.
