Lanzarote. Crushing watts, swimming with sharks and stealing some lava rock.

Lanzarote, the triathlon mecca, dominated by tri suits, aero helmets, garmins, and where the most popular question at the tourist information centre is, "What's the strava QOM/KOM  up Tabayesco?"

 

I was here for a week with Total Tri Training, my coach Chris Standidge and fellow coaches Phil Murphy (the good cop), Hammo (the entertainer) Clare (keeping the boys in order), had picked Sands Beach Resort in Lanza to put myself and a whole host of athletes under the hammer for a week, of quality training in the sunshine. 

 

That's right, "a quality week of training". Somehow I ended up racing the Tri122 Lanzarote triathlon race on our last day in Lanzarote. This was not in the plan. I didn't have a tri suit or quick release laces, or a race number belt, or elastic bands to tie my shoes to my bike. But that's where team mates come in handy, I begged, borrowed and stole the essentials. As below shows, I managed fine in my run vest.  I wasn't particularly keen to race, having clocked up quite a few hours of training in the pool, on the bike and running over the week. Chris, thought I should just get out there and race, and by magic "Tri 122 Costa Teguise race" popped up in my Training peaks dairy for Saturday.

 Good to start the season with a race win in the Olympic (ish) distance race. 1km sea swim, 60km ride, 10km run.

 Picked up some Lava trophies with Ele Haresign, who raced the 70.3 race and finished 2nd in her age category. Great to see her on the come back after a troublesome time with injuries. I picked up two trophies for the win over the Olympic distance and fastest time up Tabayesco.

It was a great end to the week and a good start to the 2017 Triathlon season. 

The race finished off a tip top week of training. In previous trips, I have focused on bike miles, but this time we had a good balance of swim, bike, run. We had some big bike days but also enjoyed running on the trails and suffering on a run hill reps work out along side Chris's 26x200 morning swim session. He really knows how to deliver some fun sessions! 

 

Here is a little summary from the week. Pre race tapering is obviously over rated! Photos from everyone apart from myself, as I was terrible at taking photos (it's hard to ride fast into headwinds holding a camera!)

 

Great to have a short commute to the pool each morning. A nice room with a view, thanks OTE sports for the nutrition for the week.

We had some really informative talks from the coaches in the evenings. With a discussion on Training peaks and using it to inform training/racing and Andy used the go pro all week to pick up some good video for swim analysis.  Post run recovery, peanut butter and apple on toast with OTE recovery drink, while i admire the 19km covered on the Suunto Watch.

 

 In the Gym with Ele, hitting out Most Motion wiggle strong routine. Some nice wheel push ups to end the day!More to follow on this, including a video of some movements that have helped my haglunds on my heel.
