Season Finale, Ibiza European 70.3 Championships. The one in the thunderstorm.

November 17, 2018

A GB elite Triathlon suit has stayed under my bed, unwrapped for the last 4 years! I had been picked to race for GB in the European Elite Duathlon race in 2014, but I crashed on a training chain gang ride 10 days beforehand. Waking up in the back of an ambulance and spending the night in hospital ruled me out of that race.(I wrote about that here). Since then, I have kept the goal, to wear the GB Tri suit, in an elite international competition. I wasn't going to unwrap it, until I was picked for another race.

In October 2017, this goal was still in the forefront of my mind when planning my season.

I spotted the European 70.3 Championships, read the GB elite team qualifying criteria and set out to get there.

Two thirds of the way through the season, I felt I had enough results, under my belt, that met the qualifying standard, so i submitted by application to British Triathlon and crossed my fingers. There were only 3 GB female spots available, so I could have met the qualifying criteria but if 5 other athletes, also wanted to race, it would be down to the selectors.

In August, I heard I had been selected. Britain Triathlon, had a different kit provider this year, so I still wouldn't end up unwrapping the kit, that lay under the bed. That was ok!

Proud to be part of the Great Britain Elite Team for European 70.3 Championships. Alongside Sarah Lewis, Alice Hector, George Goodwin and Tom Davis.

Oct 27th 2018.The European 70.3 Championships, Ibiza

Race Summary:

- The day started with thunder, lightning and heavy rain. Not to worry, the race wasn't due to start until 1pm.

- 12 noon , there was still thunder lightning and heavy rain.

- Race delayed till 2pm

- 2pm, myself and the other GB girls, Alice Hector and Sarah Lewis are camped out in Team Manger, Dave Newport's apartment, wondering whether the race will go ahead.

Good job we had Dave, getting food supplies for us " I have shit, ham, shit cheese, rice crackers and coffee" ummm cheers Dave!

- The race director, announces, the race will start at 3pm, with the bike being shortened to 1 lap, instead of 2. 45km, instead of 90km, due to the lack of day light hours, we now had. The swim (2km) and run (21km) stayed the same.

In pictures this is how the race looked:

2km+ (felt bloody miles) sea swim around a rocky outcrop/island  (island is a bit of an exaggerated term) . Lost contact with the group, clawed my way back to a few people, was happy to reach dry land. Not my best swim.

Trying to get through T1 as fast as possible! Thanks Sam and Tina for the Videos.

Space ship helmet, heading through T1, to attempt to catch some places on the bike. Successfully achieved, as came off the bike in 6th, riding the 3rd fasteest bike time of the day. Entering T2 in between team mates Alice Hector and Sarah Lewis.

Apparently it rained most of the day, I didn't really notice. It was warmer than Weymouth, so that was a bonus. The run, was a combination of wet pavements, steps and cobbles through the old town and along the waterfront. Felt good for the first 2/3rd and the final 3rd was a bit of survival. I heard so many cheers from the GB Age group competitors and supporters on the side, it helped so much. THANK YOU.

 In full concentration mode!

7th place for me in the end. Happy with that, as I came in ranked 15th on the start list. Well done Sarah and Alice who finished 2nd and 3rd and George and Tom who were 5th and 6th respectively. A good day out for Team GB. Big thanks to Dave Newport, our fantastic team manager.

It was a great way to end the season. Thanks Rob, Hannah, Lucy, Mike and Mum for the great company in the apartment and all the support. A big well done to Rob for your race too.

Over and out for 2018. Thanks for the support everyone.
